Some buildings have a quiet presence about them.

Standing proudly along Haven Bank in Boston, Lincolnshire, this tall period property has watched the town change around it for generations. Like many older buildings, it carries the marks of that history on its roof, too.

Time had taken its toll, but not every part of the roof needed replacing.

At first glance, you might assume it was time for a completely new roof.

It wasn't.

The issues were confined to the rear roof slope. Over the years, slates had slipped, the leadwork had deteriorated, and redundant water heater flues left behind from previous alterations no longer served a purpose.

The front roof was telling a different story.

It was still doing exactly what it had been built to do.

One of the most important parts of roofing isn't simply replacing materials. It's understanding what the building is telling you. Sometimes that means renewing an entire roof. Other times, it's about renewing only what needs attention while preserving what still has years of service left.

For this project, the rear roof slope was carefully stripped before new breathable felt, treated battens and leadwork were installed.

Original slates suitable for reuse were retained and re-laid wherever possible, with matching new slates introduced to complete the roof. The result is a re-roof that protects the building while preserving the character it has earned over generations.

One slate at a time, the roof begins to tell a new story.

By the time the scaffolding comes down, very little about the building will look different.

That's often the sign of a good roofing project.

The roof still belongs to the building.

Not every roof needs replacing.
